One and Many

A group show featuring work by Monica Baptista, Hiraku Suzuki, Agnieszka Kurant, Jacob Dahl Jürgensen, David Molander, and Atsushi Kaga. These artists engage a variety of mediums, from digital film and photography to the traditional art of sewing, transforming one piece into many as they channel possible meta-narratives in their work.

An exclusive concert by musicians Yuka Honda (former Cibo Matto) and Petra Haden (The Decemberists, Foo Fighters) playing new songs from a duet album on which they have been collaborating, as well as improvisations with Haden’s distinctive vocal layering over a soundscape of Yuka Honda’s music.

Theory of Everything

A screening featuring videos by 10 Japanese artists. Curated by Location One resident artist Yuki Okumura. The screening will be followed by a discussion between the artist and Nathalie Anglès, Residency Program director.

Somnambulic – Martin Beauregard

Location One presented Somnambulic, the first New York solo exhibition by Canadian artist Martin Beauregard. This new body of work highlights persistent themes for the artist revolving around the relation between dream, illusion, and reality. It also produces a “fantastical strangeness” that is characteristic of Beauregard’s work, as he explores modes of perception through play and creation.

Location One has an ongoing informal working relationship with artists from the faculty and student body at MIT. Because of this rewarding association, we occasionally exhibit interesting work on a short-term basis in our galleries or online. On May 20, 2004 students from the MIT Visual Arts Program opened an exhibition entitled, “Creative Intelligence”. Featuring work by Lukas Lysakowski, Hiroharu Mori, Carrie Bodle, Ross Cisneros and Clementine Cummer.

Over the past thirty-five years Julius Hemphill has earned a reputation as one who broke down boundaries and defied labels.

Fall Music Series: Mark Feldman

Violinist and Composer Mark Feldman will present a concert of music for solo violin featuring compositions from his CD Music for Violin Alone (Tzadik).

In Hot Persuit Series: Frequency Hopping

In 1940, Hedy Lamarr, the “most beautiful woman in the world” and composer George Antheil, the “bad boy of music” met at a Hollywood dinner party. Two years later, they received a patent for an invention now recognized as the model for wireless communication.

Fall Music Series: Skuli Sverrisson and Jim Black

This duo’s performance marks the second program of the Fall 2001 Music Series at Location One. (Percussionist Gerry Hemingway played a solo concert on October 20th and violinist Mark Feldman will perform on December 14th).

Wake the Dead Spring Music Series : Arch and How I See the World, #1

With electric harp, processors, multiple projections, and cameras, they perform a live music/live video duet. Parkins continues her sonic research on her self-invented electric harp, a hybrid of an acoustic harp and an electric guitar. Higgins utilizes video mixers and cameras in a live performance setting, enabling her to “play” the video as a musician would play an instrument.

Vivisection

The initiation of our film/video program with “Vivisection”, a video installation featuring work by Lisa Bateman, Janene Higgins, Luther Price, Miroslaw Rogala, and Carolee Schneemann.This work will appear in the gallery and will be streamed on our website.
