Location One is happy to present new work by Hermelinde Hergenhahn (Germany) and Mafalda Santos (Portugal). Hergenhahn’s installation will consist of a series of pencil drawings gathered from experiences of quotidian life, and a video projection and wall etching in the gallery.

Location One is happy to present new work by residents Moira Ricci and Hung Nguyen Manh.

An installation of the moon with colonies created by participating artists. Contestants draw from the model using either a computer or pen and paper, and in the end, a jury of esteemed experts chooses the winner. The winner receives a plot of real estate on the moon.

Sobell (USA) pioneered the use of video, computers, and interactivity in art, as well as performance on the Web. Since 1969, when she first used video to document participants' undirected interactions with her sculptures, she investigates the extent to which video enables her to manipulate the relation between time and space, and to create a vortex for human experience, in which the mediated event coincides with public experience, memory, and relationships.

Mafalda Santos (Portugal). Organizational schemes, networks, interconnection and principles of scale and composition are determinant in Mafalda’s work. Expanded drawings on murals or ground works cull their information from computer interface, books and archives to create a simplified imagery that reflects “a moment/place in a mental or social structure of relations.” The artist also considers that they offer a comment on the specific context for which the work was produced.

Hung Nguyen Manh is an artist, a self-taught composer and an active participant in the “alternative” art scene in Hanoi. As an artist whose practice is driven by interdisciplinarity, his work investigates current symbology as opposed to a Vietnamese/Oriental aesthetic that reaches into the past for visual vocabulary.Mr. Nguyen’s residency at Location One is supported by the Asian Cultural Council.

Location One presents the first of two exhibitions showcasing new work developed during their residencies by eight artists participating in the 2006-2007 International Residency Program.

Yumiko Furukawa (Japan) Using words and images derived from literature, Yumiko creates unique video and sculpture installations and performances, which serve as a bridge between literature and visual arts.

Mariana Viegas (Portugal) Mariana works mainly with photography and video, questioning the media and subverting reality. In the artist’s view, landscape is an entity which is transformed by our presence and which, in turn, transforms us. Mariana observes and records the daily rituals performed by people in natural environments which are developed within the urban habitat, and draws out of these situations possibilities of existing narratives.

Lydia Venieri (Greece) Lydia is a multiple media artist whose work ranges from sculpture to installations incorporating painting, photography, video and the Internet. The fusion of mythological references with the everyday lies at the heart of her inspiration : “I create universes and landscapes where I project stories, conspiracy theories related to the media and mythological legends”.

Wang Ya-Hui (Taiwan) Wang,Ya-hui is primarily a video and video installation artist. Her work is driven by the exploration of human consciousness and examines how hidden or conscious changes of “being” are triggered through illusion and imagination. Her installations often make apparent shifts of perception and the passage of one visible reality to another.

Mayumi Nakazaki (The Netherlands) Mayumi refers to herself as a product of “Japanese-style Westernization”. She is interested in the notion of the “self that exists and interplays in between parallels”. Her practice is a balance between creating fiction out of reality and trying to elevate reality to the rank of narrative. She focuses on sociological and ethnological issues with subjects that deal with disguise, uniformity, identity, gender and more recently with behavioural and conversational patterns between people.

Yoon-Young Park (Korea) Trained as a traditional Oriental painter in Korea, Yoon-Young’s drawings and paintings integrate calligraphic and surrealistic methods of working into which the artist incorporates a wide range of contemporary cultural references ranging from fiction, documentary movies and plays to quiz sessions for the audience.

Leesa and Nicole Abahuni (U.S.A) Leesa and Nicole Abahuni are artists and twins from New York who collaborate on the investigation of the senses and the exploration of the interrelationships between the visual, aural, and tactile realms.

Rie Kawakami (Japan) Kawakami works in the tradition of iron and steel welding. Her sculptures attempt to convey notions of life and its cycles, such as the ever-expanding universe, the dividing of a nucleus through an electron microscope, or the repeated cycles of construction and destruction of cities.

Nina Katchadourian (U.S.A.)

Katchadourian’s work exists across a wide variety of media that includes sound, video, sculpture and photography. At Location One, the artist will be working on a new synchronized multi-channel video work called “Zoo” and a number of new sound-based works.

So Youn Jeong (Korea) In her videos and installations, So Youn Jeong’s explores aesthetic issues relating to time and space, memory and identity. Recent works investigate the radical impact on the human spirit of an era driven by the obsession for speed in different times and spaces. The interactive nature of art constitutes another area of interest for the artist.

Teresa Henriques (Portugal). Henriques’s work revolves around the understanding of the concept of “Perception”. The guidelines of her research are defined by drawing, geometry, philosophy and optical phenomena. The resulting body of work consists of drawing machines and contemplative objects in space highlighting the relationship between artwork and human body.

Cliff Evans (U.S.A.). Bare life: Booth Girl*s and Stormtroopers: Accumulation, 2007A multi-channel photomontage animation that is presented as an object similar to an altar piece or a product display. It is constructed from an LCD screen and personal media players. It functions as a machine to contain, decipher and display images gathered from online sources. It situates itself within a soft-fascism, producing a baroque spectacle that unfolds and repeats. It, perhaps, is a clockwork meant to tell the time in an age of tech-fetish and availability at a glance.

Location One presented dancer Glen Rumsey joining the special performance by New York-based avant-garde musician Elliott Sharp, and percussionists Danny Tunick and Christine Bard, during the opening of In The Sky (performance at 7pm, free). The multimedia installation, which marks the first solo show for twin artists Leesa and Nicole Abahuni, is an exploration into the sharing of the senses and the interconnectedness between perception and sensation as experienced through visual, aural, and physical realms.

Location One presented the debut solo exhibition in NYC by artists Leesa & Nicole Abahuni, on view in our main gallery at 26 Greene Street from November 21st through January 27th 2007 (Tue-Sat, 12-6pm). The multimedia installation, which was commissioned by Location One, is entitled In the Sky, is an exploration into the sharing of the senses and the interconnectedness between perception and sensation as experienced through visual, aural, and physical realms.

NETWORK NEUTRALITY with Mike Godwin and Drazen Pantic. The term “Network Neutrality” (introduced by Columbia law professor Tim Wu) describes an Internet network that does not favor one application (for example Web) over another (such as online gaming or Voice over IP).

Mike Godwin - After the RevolutionsMay 24, 2006After the RevolutionOver the years, one internet “panic” after another has set people shaking in their boots. Godwin presents the argument that we are currently in a state of perpetual post-revolution panic.

On Thursday, February 9th, Location One presented the first of two Spring exhibitions showcasing new work developed by artists from Italy, France, Germany, Korea, and Portugal who are participating in the 2005-2006 International Residency Program. Featured works represent a diverse range of artistic approaches.

A living experiment in cross-cultural relations with foundation Chairman Krzysztof Czyzewski. About Czyzewski, Gail Kimberling of the New York Times has written that he “has based his life’s work on pushing the limits of borders, whether it involves going beyond the acceptable, bringing the past to the present, or bridging one country or culture with another.” His presentation will include footage from documentary work generated by the program.

Federico was born in Madrid, Spain where he obtained his undergraduate degree in Fine Arts at University of Castilla. A free public screening of Daniel Blaufuk’s documentary Under Strange Skies, the story of his German Jewish family’s flight from Nazi Germany to Lisbon.

Location One presented the New York debut exhibition and special performance reading by renowned Japanese poet Gozo Yoshimasu, recent recipient of the Purple Ribbon Award from the Japanese Government for his significant cultural contributions. Poetic Spectrum will present Yoshimasu’s photographs and copperplate calligraphies for the first time to the New York audience, and will also bring the legendary poet to New York to perform after a ten-year absence.

Location One, a not-for-profit multimedia arts organization, opened its second artists in residence group exhibition with multimedia work developed during their stay by Daniel Blaufuks (Portugal), Isabelle Jenniches (The Netherlands), Dominik Lejman (Poland), Jiun-Ting Lin (Taiwan), and Javier Viver (Spain). This exhibition was in Location One’s gallery through June 28, 2003 and was streamed live on our website (www.location1.org).

Benoît Maubrey and his Berlin-based Audio Gruppe build electro-acoustic clothing and suits. These are clothes equipped with loudspeakers, amplifiers, and 257 K samplers that enable them to react directly with their environment by recording live sounds, voices, or instruments in their proximity, and amplifying them as a mobile and multi-acoustic performance.

Alexandra’s work uses drawing to explore the manifold relations between artist and audience, the public and the private. She not only explores drawing in its essential form of marks on paper, but also through the expanded frame of video, photography and performance.

Born in Istanbul, Köken Ergun was taught by the playwright Güngör Dilmen and the actress Yildiz Kenter at the Istanbul State Conservatory and completed his postgraduate degree in Classics at King’s College London.

Although Soares has been experimenting in several mediums, his more recent installations tend to combine video animation, DVD projection, and stereo sounds of his own composition.

LETTER FROM THE GIRL, MAILED AT THE GAS STATION is an experimental digital video/16 mm film hybrid. Using digital video to reference surveillance and voyeurism, and film to reference cinematic history, LETTER draws on Film Noir, American dreamscapes, American desert mythology, the B-movie, oppositional cinema, and Noir's descendent, True Crime.

Isabelle Jenniches (The Netherlands) October 2002 –June 2003 In her onsite/online performances, she often draws upon such “low tech” sources as the ubiquitous public webcam, and her ongoing compulsive collections of found footage from the Internet. Isabelle Jenniches’ work has been shown in such venues as Theater de Balie, Amsterdam, Grand Theatre, Groningen, Society for Old and New Media, De Waag, Amsterdam and the World Wide Web.

John Cage's 1992 film work One 11 and 103, an exploration of light and sound scores, will play in alternation with Laurie Spiegel's electronic music, Obsolete Systems.

White Balance (to think is to forget differences) is an effort to uncover the geographies of power, the frontiers of privilege. It revisits this problem from different angles, creating short circuits of meaning which are hosted by improbable audiovisual matches. Media and internet footage is intermixed with images shot in downtown Manhattan before and after the September 11th attacks.

With electric harp, processors, multiple projections, and cameras, they perform a live music/live video duet. Parkins continues her sonic research on her self-invented electric harp, a hybrid of an acoustic harp and an electric guitar. Higgins utilizes video mixers and cameras in a live performance setting, enabling her to “play” the video as a musician would play an instrument.

The artist/musician performs mesmerizing world trance textures and driving gypsy grooves on an amazing arsenal of amplified hybrid string instruments made from household objects and tools. Duchampian Dada meets Hybrid Hindu Hendrix.

Drazen Pantic, a native of Belgrade, is the founder of OpenNet, the Internet department of Radio B92 in Belgrade and Serbia’s first Internet service provider (est. 1995).
